Kate Raworth: Doughnut Economics

Taking a big idea beyond the keynote stage

Doughnut Economics is a hugely ambitious idea for how we can meet everyone’s needs within the limits of the planet. It being put into practice in communities around the globe.

Kate Raworth wanted to find new ways to connect with people beyond the audiences she was already reaching through talks and conferences.

She had the beginnings of an idea: what if she put a circus in a van and took it on the road?

We worked together to turn that ambition into a live experience. We pulled apart the ideas, worked out what we most wanted people to understand and experience, what would make people really care about Doughnut Economics and experimented with creative ways to bring them to life.

We brought in puppeteers who had worked on the stage show War Horse, who helped transform everyday and circus objects into visual storytelling, and a beatboxer who helped Kate turn the audience into the sounds of a jungle.

The result was Doughnut Economics Circus: part circus, part workshop, part economics lesson, using games, performance and participation to give people a completely different way into the ideas.

“Working with Sascha was wonderful and empowering. She really listened in order to understand what I was seeking to create, she playfully brought challenging new possibilities into the room.”
